Upon the Stone Shore

Upon the Stone Shore is a unique and challenging composition for big band. Alternating between 4/4 and 5/4, this samba-inspired work uses a rhythmic montuno to connect sections. The montuno is constructed to work harmonically in 4/4 and rhythmically in 5/4, with these two elements weaving an intricate dance by displacing one another depending on the feel. The work also features long and open improvised solo opportunities for several members of the band, with doubling in the woodwind background figures that create a light and playful texture. Overall, the piece has a distinct groove that drives relentlessly like waves crashing on the rocks of Barcelona’s shoreline.
